Do you ever stop to think what your life would be like if social media didn't exist?
Like, really, really think about it.
Would I have friends? I met my bestie from college in the dorms ... but really, we met on the UCSC Livejournal the summer before college started. If we hadn't connected there, would we have been as close as we are now?
Would I be a mom? I know people don't think of dating websites and apps as "social media," but they are. And that's how I met my ex-husband. If not for social media, would my kids even exist?
It's easy for us to villainize social media. It's full of racist porn bots. It's owned by billionaires. It has tons of "features" that compromise people's safety. It allows misinformation and disinformation to spread like wildfire.
BUT. What if we also think about the positives of social media? How it can be used to bring people together. To bolster relationships. To build community. To share knowledge and information.
This is what I was thinking about when I posted this reel yesterday. Because there has to be a happy medium. These platforms can do so much harm ... but they can also do so, so much good. And I view my job as figuring out how to bring that good to fruition.
That's all I got for this week. No cheeky lessons. No Schitt's Creek GIFs. Just ruminations on how we can turn these technologies on their heads, and use them to benefit us not just financially, but emotionally, spiritually, and communally.
That would be a revolution in and of itself.
