Incogni Research just published a study about social media, and the TL;DR? People are fucking tired of being on social media.β
Digital burnout is real, and it is VERY much here. I'm sure you're all feeling it, because I know I certainly am. Even as someone who works in social media, who loves the interactions these platforms allow, who values the communities these platforms can help build, there are days I seriously consider just throwing my phone into Puget Sound.
Remember Instagram in 2011? You'd post every day. Sometimes multiple times a day. Grainy pictures of food and dogs and the full moon. When they finally started allowing teeny tiny video clips in 2014, I was all about those 7-second clips of my newborn squeaking, fussing, smiling, and wiggling.
Fast forward to 2026, and I barely post my kids on socials β even on my private account. Part of it is not wanting to document everything so I can live more in the moment. Part of it is concerns for their (and my) privacy. And part of it is the utter exhaustion of having to keep up with my feed, my comments, and my messages across six platforms (some of which have multiple profiles), alongside all of the other administrivia that adulting requires.
βIncogni's suvey results certainly reflect my reality. They reported that 55% of people are posting on socials less now than they did five years ago, and more than half the respondents said that maintaining an online presence feels like work.
And it does, right? It's fucking exhausting. Especially if you have both a personal and professional presence to keep up. Especially if you have a network of friends and family that spans the globe. Especially if you're trying to run a small business while the economy crashes and burns around us.
This is actually a big reason why I started Golden Poppy Digital β I saw just how stressed out people were by having to be online all the time, and I knew there was an opportunity for me to offer help. Because while I love social media and find value in these apps, I know it's not for everyone β and no one should have to spend time doing things that cause them anxiety or discomfort.
So if you're finding that social media is causing you more harm than benefit, you have my blessing and support to take a step back. Your time is a non-renewable resource, and your mental load deserves a reprieve.
If you want support with your social media, I'm always here to help, but if not, that's cool, too 𧑠You get to decide how you manage your online presence, because social media (and all its demands) is not in charge β you are.
